Developed by Google and The Open Handset Alliance (OHA), it has come a long way serving uncountable number of people. It is important to note that each Android version is named after a dessert like Donut, Cupcake, Eclair, Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, Froyo and Honeycomb.

Here is the list of all Android version names. Read on :

Android 1.1 :

This is the first Android updated version and was released in February 2009. It is the prominent one of Android OS.

Android 1.5 Cupcake :

This was the first release with a codename that too based on a dessert – Cupcake. Android 1.5 Cupcake was released on April 30 and was based on Linux Kernel 2.6.27. There were reports that it was first decided as Android 1.2 but Google wanted to be a major one and named it Android 1.5 Cupcake.

Android 1.6 SDK – Donut :

Android 1.6 Donut was released on September 5, 2009 and was based on Linux kernel 2.6.29. This version fixed the reboot errors in the OS, revamped the features of photo and video and also featured better search integration. Note that it is the first version to offer Google’s turn-by-turn navigation feature.

Android 2.0 SDK Eclair :

Released on October 26, 2009, the Android 2.0 came out with bugfix version and later the 2.1 was released in January 2010. Remember it is not a single release. It supported Bluetooth 2.1, flash and digital zoom for the camera, live wallpapers, multi-touch support and other stuff.

Android 2.2 Froyo :

Android 2.2 Froyo was released on May 20, 2010 and was based on Linux Kernel 2.6.32. By adopting the javascript ‘just-in-time’ compiler engine from Google’s browser, it gained speed. Also, it improved the browser support by adding USB tethering and wi-fi hotspot capability, Flash 10.1 plug-in and animated GIF support.

Android 2.3/2.3.7 Gingerbread :

Android 2.3 Gingerbread SDK was unveiled on December 6, 2010. Based on Linux kernel 2.6.35, it supports gyroscopes and other sensors, NFC wireless transaction capability, more than one camera, SIP internet calling. Also, it features a download manager, few tweaks to allow usage on Tablet and others.

Android 3.0, 3.1 and 3.2 Honeycomb :

This was released in February 2011 and was then followed by 3.1 and 3.2 in July and August of 2011. It was made for tablets. At first, Motorola Xoom was the first Android 3.X tablet to be launched and then many others were released.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich :

The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is tablet-only platform with its mobile platform. This was the first attempt of Google to synthesize Honeycomb and was released in October 2011. It came out with a new design and default font and other features.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean :

This was unveiled in 2012 and added features – ‘Google Now’, an AI assistant, more interactive notifications and other stuff. It also supports ‘voice typing’ which is nothing but a built-in speech-to-text engine.

Android 4.4 Kitkat :

Android 4.4 Kitkat was launched on September 3, 2013 by Google and this was optimised to run on a wide range of smartphones. The parent company of the Kitkat, Nestle also launched an advertising campaign during the time of the release. Interestingly, this took the feature ‘Google Now’ and took it to ‘Ok Google’. It also introduced Emoji to Google’s keyboard.

Android 5.0/5.1 Lollipop:  

This was launched on November 12, 2014 and featured a brand new runtime called ART. It was unveiled a good battery life and other UI improvements.

Android .X Marshmallow :

It was unveiled on May 28, 2015 during Google I/O. This came out with several changes and also had a great impact on further developments.

Android 7.0 Nougat :

Android 7.0 Nougat is the latest version of the series and was released in the second half of 2016. It came out with several stunning features.
